Cavaliers Hire David Blatt as Head Coach

The Cleveland Cavaliers have wrapped up their head coaching vacancy in hiring Euro League Coaching Star David Blatt.

David Blatt, formerly the Head Coach of Maccabi Tel Aviv, has made an impressive resume overseas. Blatt received Israeli League Coach of the Year honors four times, won six Israeli Cup Championships, and recently he and his team were crowned 2014 Euro League Champions. Blatt also coached the Russia National Team to the Bronze medal in the 2012 Olympics.

The last time Blatt was involved in basketball in the United States is when he played for Princeton University in 1981, under Pete Carril.

David Blatt announced his intentions to leave for the NBA on June 12th, where NBA Teams were in heavy pursuit of him. Golden State Warriors Head Coach Steve Kerr wanted to make Blatt his lead assistant coach, while the Cavaliers wanted to offer him the head coaching job.

The Wine and Gold were rumored to have previously reached out to David Blatt before having him come in for an in-person interview. On June 20th 2014, the Cavaliers announced that the team and David Blatt have agreed to a deal that made Blatt the 20th Head Coach in franchise history.

Cavs General Manager David Griffin originally stated that there was no timetable on hiring a head coach, as the hire came just days before the NBA Draft.

With a head coach now in place, the Cavs now turn to the Draft, where they hold the Number 1 overall pick.
