Cavs Strike Gold Once Again, Win Draft Lottery

In one of his first moves as Cleveland Cavaliers General Manager, David Griffin brings home the number one overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft.

On a night that no one saw coming, the Cavs were able to continue their streak of good fortune at the NBA Draft Lottery. Out of three of the past four years, the Cavs were able to bring back the number one overall pick.

The Cavaliers odds to the number one overall pick stood at 1.7%. Many in Cleveland dismissed the Draft Lottery expecting the Cavs to land between the 9-11 range. However, lady luck continues to show that the luck is still alive in the Cavaliers organization.

Now, the ball is in David Griffin’s court.

With the #1 pick, there are many avenues the wine and gold could travel on. They can keep the pick and have their choice of one of three players, or entertain a trade with the pick (and possibly players) for an established veteran.

This draft is touted to being better stacked with talent compared to last year’s draft. Leading the class is Kansas Guard Andrew Wiggins, Duke Forward Jabari Parker, and Kansas Center Joel Embiid. The Cavs will have from now to June 26th to turn in a card with one of those players’ names on them, or shock the world again and go with someone else in the draft.

Trade options have opened up for Cleveland, too. Many believe that Minnesota Timberwolves Forward/Center Kevin Love does not intend to stay with the organization. Love has been linked as a trade option to the Cavs for a while, and landing the number one pick definitely makes the Cavaliers an enticing trade partner, if the Timberwolves decide to part ways with their All-Star player.

Cleveland has turned its previous two number one overall picks into Kyrie Irving and Anthony Bennett. With a talent-filled draft class awaiting the wine and gold this coming NBA Draft, the Cavs are certainly in a position to make a decision that could alter their woes, and bring some much needed spark back into the franchise.
